“Chasing the Moon”

(Maine. 5 AM, The backside of a standard two-story home)

The Man on the Moon:

It’s another restless night for Selene, 6, and Dawn, 14, as their parents relentlessly argue. Selene and Dawn sneak out through their bedroom windows to meet on the garden swing in their backyard. They sit silently in the shadow of the forest behind their house while staring at the full moon peeking through the trees. Only the muffled screaming of their parents and the harmonizing of owls and crickets with the breeze and shuffling of the trees can be heard

Selene:

When was the last time mom and dad said I love you to each other?

Dawn:

I wouldn’t know. I was never alive to see it happen. Uncle Freddy says that they were pretty in love until a month after their honeymoon.

Selene:

What’s a honeymoon? Is that when you go to the moon to get honey?

(Dawn cracks a smile and quietly laughs then swings her arm around Selene and brings her close. Dawn opens her mouth to answer but stops when she begins to hear a faded siren in the distance.)

Selene:

Did mommy call the police again? What if they try to take us away like they wanted to last time?

(Selene looks up at the moons as it begins to slowly fade away then runs to her bike and rides off into the forest. Dawn quickly runs to her bike and rides off after her.)

Dawn:

Selene! Where are you going, you can’t just ride off like that!

(Selene ignores Dawn and pedals faster as the sirens drown out the songs of the animals and the colors red and blue flood into her sight of vision. She begins to mumble to herself.)

Selene:

I have to find it.

Dawn:

Selene, slow down! Come on whatever happens you know I’m gonna be there with you!

(Selene stops abruptly and looks at Dawn.)

Selene:

No! I can’t! You said that mommy and daddy loved each other when they were on the moon and I have to go to the moon to get the special honey so they could love each other again!

(Selene breaks down and begins to sob. The sun begins to rise and the sky morphs into an array of pinks and oranges as it flushes out the moon. Selene looks up at the sky.)

Selene:

No. No, no, no no! Please! Come back! We need you, I need you!

(Blackout.)

Revised Script

“Chasing the Moon”

Selene: 6 years old, the most adorable, innocent child you’ve ever seen. Loves and depends on her older sister like no one else.

Dawn: 16 years old, a bit of a bitter view of the world herself but she’s always there for her younger sister.

Sun: Makes the world aware of their presence, dominant but not overbearing and aggressive.

Moon: Soft, and gentle. They are as graceful as a ballerina, and as elegant as can be.

Mommy: Although less aggressive than Momma, she’s not innocent and can hold her own. Mommy loves Momma but is convinced that Momma doesn’t care anymore and fights with her to make her feel the pain she does as someone who thinks they’re watching their wife float away from them before their very eyes.

Momma: Although not seen, it’s obvious Momma has a dominance over mommy. She’s aggressive and loud but still has love for her wife, she just doesn’t know how to show it these days because she’s a bit clueless. Although Momma has always been loyal to her wife no matter what Mommy may think.

(Maine. 5 AM, Dawn’s and Selene’s bedroom. The sun is sleeping on stage right as the moon stands elegantly on stage left. The moon dances about in their spot elegantly. You can hear Mommy and Momma arguing in the background, they gradually get louder as the scene continues. Selene and Dawn center stage sleeping.)

Momma:

Are you fucking kidding me? I just got back from work, it takes me 20 minutes to get here and I got here in 23, what do you think I was doing in those 3 minutes?

Mommy:

Oh so now I’m blind right? I mean I must be blind because then that would mean that I didn’t see that bitch that dropped you off today huh? 23 minutes sure is enough time when you’re in the car with them the entire time.

(Selene sits up and looks to the left and right, she then gets up and taps Dawn on her shoulder. Although they claimed to be sleeping, it’s obvious they were wide awake. The moon stops dancing and turns to face the girls with a smile and smiles.)

Selene:

When was the last time mommy and momma said I love you to each other?

Dawn opens her mouth to answer but stops when they hear Mommy and Momma arguing again.)

Momma:

It’s only Linda, what do you think she’s gonna do? I only let her drive me home because she’s been having issues with her husband and needs someone to talk to. What do you want me to do, tell her to fuck off and find a new husband?

Mommy:

Yes! That would be perfect! Just because she has a husband doesn’t mean she’s so innocent, don’t you remember high school? Of course she was dating the captain of the soccer team but that doesn’t mean it stopped her from screwing the captain of the cheerleaders too! (beat) You know what? That’s it, if you want to talk to her that badly, why don’t you spend the night with her?

(Loud banging noises can be heard in the background of Mommy grabbing Momma’s stuff and throwing it out the door. Selene looks up at the moons as it begins to dance away then snaps her head to the sun who is slowly waking up. Selene runs and grabs a piece of paper and starts writing.)

Selene:

(to herself.) I have to fix this.

Dawn:

Selene? What’s going on kid?

(Selene ignores Dawn and looks up at the sun and moon who have now passed each other. She writes more aggressively and starts folding the paper into a paper airplane.)

Selene:

(This time, louder.) I have to fix it.

Dawn:

Selene, calm down. You don’t have to fix anything, everything will be okay, it’s me and you forever remember? And as long as I’m with you, everything will be okay.

(Selene stops abruptly and looks at Dawn.)

Selene:

No! I can’t! You said that mommy and daddy loved each other when they were on the moon and I have to talk to the moon to get the special honey so they could love each other again!

(Selene runs to stage right in an attempt to catch up with the moon and throws the paper airplane at it. The moon is already on the floor sleeping. The sun has taken its place in the moon’s spot. They down on the girls and shakes their head.)

Selene:

(To the moon.) No. No, no, no no! Please! Come back! We need you, I need you!

(Blackout.)
